The Common Core Standards are coming our way soon! As we begin this journey over the next two years, there are a variety of resources for us to review and learn from. The video link noted above summarizes the new standards and a few ideas that other schools across our nation have utilized to roll out this work.
According to the video, "by fourth grade, at least half of students’ reading should be informational, and by high school, at least 70 percent. And the responsibility for teaching all this doesn’t fall just on English teachers. The standards call for literacy and writing to be taught across all disciplines: history, social studies, science and technical subjects."
ReplyDeleteInformational reading has been my focus in social studies and science this year, but more has to be done. maybe we could incorporate part of our library time into these type of skills.
I love the exploration of expanding our reading into other topics as a team! We definitely will continue to work on this next year and beyond.
Deleteso true...
ReplyDelete"When's the last time an employer asked one of us to write a story about ourselves? No. They ask us to read something and then write about it.
What you have to be able to do is show that you can argue based on evidence and show that you can convey complex information clearly."
The real life and work experience screams out in the new common core standards. It is a bit over-welming and exciting at the same time.
DeleteIt makes the use of graphic organizer even more valuable as the students learn to build that type of thinking (this what I know/think because of this specific proof). I make up my own G.O.'s and have borrowed some for Los Pen, but I really like the idea of adopting a school wide writing program that has G.O's built in for consistency and convenience.
DeleteIt's exciting that writing, speaking, listening, and language have been developed into their own sets of standards. As schools make the change to formally adopting the standards, all personnel should come together and discuss how they can bring their expertise into the classroom and collaborate to address these standards. Professionals within special education can and should be very active members in developing lessons and means of addressing these standards for all students.
ReplyDeleteI love the clarity of these standards and I think about the new common core standards, I can't help but think about the vast possibilities that come with utilized them. So exciting!
